Inspired by a 19th-century lace edged shawl

The inspiration for the Tree Tops Wrap was from a photo of a lace shawl in a knitting book written in 1859, The Ladies' Complete Guide to Needle-work and Embroidery by Miss F. Lambert.

I was intrigued initially by the tapering of both the beginning lace pattern (see illustration below) and the following section of solid knitting. The solid section had the appearance of being worked in short rows, which actually was an illusion. One half of the shawl was folded only partially over the other half, creating the impression of tapered outer edges.

Inspired with the illusion of short rows in the shawl, I designed a lacy V-shaped shawl. The Tree Tops Wrap has two sections of lace similar to the lace in the original shawl, and between them a section of ribbed short rows. The lace patterning reminded me of the tops of trees in a forest.
